What is a hackathon?

Hackathons are a hybrid/virtual 48-hour competition that bring together youth from across South Africa, Africa, and globally in the study fields of software development, business, marketing and gaming.

Youth collaborate intensively in teams to create a tech solution such as a web or mobile application, and a business plan, that will address 1 or more of the 10 socio-economic challenges affecting the public.

Hackathon Prizes

Winners of the EPF hackathon stand chances of winning cash prizes and enrolment into an entrepreneurship programme,the EPF Incubation Hub, where we guide the youth to develop their solutions into a successful startup that the greater public will benefit from.

Hackathon Missions

Youth Empowerment: We are committed to ensuring that Youth from townships and rural areas are not left behind on the journey towards a digital future.

Youth Skills Development: Enabling youth to learn team dynamics, soft skills, and applying technical skills they learn in university.

Youth Self-Employment: Encouraging youth to think like future business owners.

Youth Socio-Economic: Contribution Enabling youth to be part of the solution in addressing socio-economic challenges affecting the public.

25 hackathons hosted to date since its 2020 launch

Impacted the lives of over 2000 digital innovators

Collaborated with over 40 well-established local and international organizations and government entities

Multiple news coverage across several online, tv, and radio media publications.

23 winning teams enrolled in the Incubation Hub programme.
